OVERVIEW & GOALS OF PILOT

Focus: Enhancing maintenance and self-repair for Gorenje (GOR) appliances through AI-driven XR assistance.

Process & Impact: This pilot aims to extend product lifespans and reduce electronic waste by making complex repairs accessible to both professionals and consumers. By using scanning tools to create digital mock-ups and AI to transform technical manuals into interactive knowledge graphs, the project delivers immersive training and real-time troubleshooting support.

Validation & Innovation: Moving from demo setups to live beta trials, the pilot tests a full suite of XR authoring and experiencing tools in real-world scenarios. The results focus on validating the MOTIVATE XR platform for industrial use, ensuring the technology is robust enough for high-volume consumer markets.

  • Streamlining the detection of failures and identification of spare parts.
  • Reduction of errors during complex repair procedures via guided XR instructions.
  • Reduction of costs by lowering call center demand and on-site service visits.
  • Increasing product sustainability by making self-repair more accessible to end-users.
  • Improving the efficiency of field technicians through instant remote expert support.
  • Creation of new revenue streams through scalable XR training products for third-party partners.

Training Context & Objectives: Gorenje addressed the limitations of traditional 2D service manuals and in-person training by implementing an XR ecosystem to streamline the troubleshooting of common washing machine failures. By using KAYROX authoring and assistance tools alongside the INSCAPE VTS simulation platform, the pilot provided service technicians and end-users with interactive, spatially anchored instructions on mobile devices and tablets. This digital transition aims to reduce repair errors and performance variability, resulting in faster maintenance times and higher user confidence. Comprehensive evaluations via log analysis and interviews confirmed that the system not only improves technician accuracy but also provides supervisors with better oversight through detailed performance tracking.

XR Training Implementation: Gorenje prepared the pilot environment by selecting the E7 washing machine troubleshooting scenario and providing technical assets like 3D models and flowcharts to develop the XR materials. A diverse group of service instructors, engineers, and trainees used the MOTIVATE XR beta suite – including KAYROX authoring, the AMR player, KAYROX Assistance, and INSCAPE VTS – to simulate maintenance and self-repair procedures. This collaborative setup ensured that all necessary documentation was successfully integrated into a functional demo case for testing.

The beta evaluation confirmed that while the tools significantly enhance training effectiveness, there are specific technical areas for refinement. KAYROX-authoring was praised for its structured content creation but faced usability hurdles such as the lack of an “undo” function, while the AMR Player successfully delivered spatially anchored instructions despite some minor tracking and scaling challenges. Conversely, KAYROX Assistance and INSCAPE VTS were highly reliable, providing stable remote support and immersive procedural workflows. These findings validate the potential for XR to modernise industrial maintenance while providing a clear roadmap for improving user interaction in future versions.

In 2026, the project will advance by testing enhanced versions of the XR tools, directly informed by feedback from the successful beta phase. Targeted improvements will prioritise usability refinements and new feature integration for both KAYROX-authoring and the AMR Player, specifically addressing challenges identified  during initial evaluations. Building on the proven reliability of KAYROX Assistance and INSCAPE VTS, the next pilot iteration will ensure stable remote support and seamless, immersive procedural workflows. The overarching objective is to further increase the accuracy and efficiency of E7 washing machine troubleshooting and self-repair procedures, while introducing robust performance tracking and elevating user interaction. These steps will reinforce the XR ecosystem’s capacity to modernise industrial maintenance and enable scalable, high-impact training solutions for third-party partners.
