The MOTIVATE XR project continues to make significant strides toward revolutionising training and assistance for industrial operations. Recently, the consortium released D2.5, outlining the second version of our Business Model. This living document serves as a comprehensive guide for ensuring the long-term exploitation and sustainability of our innovative extended reality (XR) solutions.
Here is a dive into the key insights from our latest market analysis and business modelling efforts.
The Expanding XR Market: Opportunities in Training and Maintenance
The demand for XR technology is experiencing exponential growth, with the global XR market projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 40.61% from 2025 to 2030. Within this thriving landscape, our report highlights three major domains where MOTIVATE XR adds significant value:
- XR Training: Immersive XR applications significantly improve knowledge retention, with studies showing retention rates can reach up to 80% one year after the training is completed. Furthermore, trainees can practice dangerous tasks within a safe and controlled environment without facing real physical risks.
- Remote Support for Maintenance: Remote maintenance capabilities allow experts to provide on-site instructions remotely. This process minimises machine downtime, significantly reduces travel costs, and fosters better worker safety during high-stress situations.
- Assembly Guidance: By overlaying real-time, task-relevant digital information onto the physical environment, XR helps lower error rates and accelerates work in complex assembly tasks.
Understanding Our Position: SWOT and Competitor Analysis
A core part of our business strategy involves continuously evaluating our position in the XR ecosystem. A newly updated SWOT analysis highlights MOTIVATE XR’s key strengths, including the provision of immersive training experiences in risk-free environments and the support for collaborative work. At the same time, we are actively developing strategies to mitigate potential weaknesses, such as hardware costs and data security.
Through a comprehensive competitor analysis, we have also identified that many existing remote assistance and training tools suffer from steep learning curves or expensive pricing models. MOTIVATE XR aims to bridge this gap by delivering more intuitive and cost-effective solutions for our target audience.
Validating the Five Pilot Business Models
A core milestone of D2.5 was the collaborative Business Model Canvas (BMC) session held during the consortium’s General Assembly in Bordeaux. Project partners, technical leads, and industrial pilot leads gathered to evaluate market desirability, operational feasibility, and long-term value across five major European industry sectors:
- Aerospace Maintenance: Exploring automated documentation conversion to accelerate technical training and reduce procedural errors.
- Home Appliance Production: Testing guided maintenance workflows and accessible digital assistance across standard mobile devices.
- Aluminium Fabrication: Enhancing precision manual tasks and skill development through standardised immersive modules.
- Energy Distribution: Applying digital-twin-enabled maintenance simulations to improve safety and field inspection readiness.
- Human-Robot Collaboration: Training workers in hybrid workspaces to improve spatial awareness and safety in robotic environments.
Through these diverse use cases, the consortium is establishing flexible exploitation framework options – ranging from platform licensing to customised software and service models – tailored to modern industrial needs.
What’s Next?
As the project enters its next phase, MOTIVATE XR is committed to refining its go-to-market strategy and ensuring the solid protection of our intellectual property rights. The insights gathered from the recent workshop will be continuously updated, leading up to a definitive operational plan and financial projection in our final deliverable.
