At the beginning of October, MOTIVATE XR partners had its first technical meeting coordinated by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in its role as the technical manager. This meeting marked a significant step forward as the consortium translated user-driven requirements into technical specifications for the MOTIVATE XR system. With initial agreements established among the technical work packages and workshops conducted for key aspects like API design, the project has moved into an intensive phase of development and integration.
Collaborative Progress Across Work Packages
MOTIVATE XR’s technical backbone spans several specialised work packages (WPs), each led by key partners and covering distinct aspects of the platform development:
WP3 – SSH and Industrial Frameworks & Co-design – CETMA
This package has been instrumental in defining the project’s architecture and specifications. Task T3.3, led by CS Group, focuses on functional specifications and designing a cybersecure architecture. The co-design process involves active participation from end-users, ensuring the platform’s functionalities align closely with real-world industrial needs.
WP4 – MOTIVATE XR Authoring Tools – CS Group
WP4 is advancing the authoring tools that empower users to create immersive XR experiences. Key contributions include:
- 3D Digital Twin Authoring by 2Freedom.
- AI-powered Industrial Knowledge Transformation spearheaded by Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, with support from Sopra Steria and D-Cube.
- XR authoring toolset development led by CS Group, alongside Tecnalia and Maggioli Group.
WP5 – MOTIVATE XR Experiencing Tools – Tecnalia Research and Innovation
This package involves the creation and refinement of XR tools for user experiences. Highlights include:
- XR experiencing tools led by Tecnalia.
- Remote Training System led by D-Cube.
- Remote Assistance System also managed by Tecnalia.
WP6 – Continuous Integration and Verification – Maggioli Group
WP6 focuses on backend integration and verification, with Universidad Politécnica de Madrid leading the development of a secure API and backend. Maggioli ensures seamless integration and validation.
Modules and Components: Laying the Technical Foundation
The MOTIVATE XR platform incorporates several pre-existing modules to streamline development and focus on integration:
Kayrox (Tecnalia): An authoring and experiencing tool. InScape (CS Group): A no-code authoring suite. MIRA Digital Twin Platform (Maggioli Group). NLP Chatbot (Sopra Steria) for analysing technical documentation. 3D Videogrammetry Scanner (2Freedom). Leonardo XR Headset (Youbiquo). RTXR Solution (D-Cube).
Given that many components are already developed and operational, current efforts concentrate on integration tasks such as defining APIs, data formats, common data models, and establishing workflows. This alignment ensures the comprehensive interoperability of the platform’s components.
Focus on New Developments: AI-Driven Solutions and Integration
While MOTIVATE XR leverages existing technologies, some elements require innovative development. For example, the AI-driven technical documentation graphics analysis component is currently under review, with the team analysing state-of-the-art open-source solutions as potential foundations for ongoing development.
Functional Requirements and Platform Architecture
WP3 is currently focused on finalising the functional requirements for all platform modules and designing the overall architecture. This work forms the first comprehensive snapshot of the MOTIVATE XR system, integrating technical insights and user feedback to guide the next stages of development.
Upcoming Milestones and Deliverables
The next phase of technical work is structured around refining the platform’s architecture and backend module integration. Key deliverables include:
Backend module definition and integration plan, covering:
- Open-source CMS (to be implemented using Strapi, chosen after evaluating various tools).
- API layer.
- Authentication and authorisation service.
- Database and file storage system.
- Third-party API integration.
- Dashboard interface.
- Security services.
- DevOps components.
These backend definitions are crucial to ensuring the platform’s robustness and security, supporting its operation across diverse industrial settings.
Technical Partners Driving Progress
The collaborative efforts of the technical partners have been vital to the project’s success. Key contributors include:
Maggioli Group | CS Group | Sopra Steria | Youbiquo | D-Cube | 2Freedom | CETMA | Universidad Politécnica de Madrid | Tecnalia Research and Innovation
MOTIVATE XR is making significant strides toward creating a seamless, integrated platform for XR authoring and experiencing. With a solid foundation built on pre-existing technologies, the project’s focus on integration and refinement is key to achieving its goals. As work progresses, upcoming milestones will include detailed architectural snapshots and backend module development to ensure a secure and user-centric XR experience. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to shape the future of industrial XR solutions.
