On September 12, 2024, the MOTIVATE XR project took an exciting step forward by participating in the “The Ultimate Fusion: Extended Reality Meets Artificial Intelligence” online webinar, an event organised by the newly established “XR Projects Cluster”. This collaborative initiative brings together significant EU-funded projects to explore critical themes in the rapidly evolving fields of extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence (AI).
The webinar featured a range of topics that reflect the dynamic landscape of XR technologies. Key themes that participants had the opportunity to discuss:
- XR and AI Convergence: as XR technologies continue to mature, their integration with AI is creating unprecedented opportunities for innovation across various sectors.
- Performance of XR Applications: analysing how XR applications are performing in real-world scenarios helps identify best practices and areas for improvement.
- Ethics and Safety in XR: with the rise of XR technologies comes the responsibility to address ethical concerns and ensure user safety.
- XR standards (OpenXR): establishing common standards like OpenXR is crucial for fostering interoperability and collaboration across different XR platforms.
- Industrial XR Applications: The potential of XR in industrial settings, including manufacturing and training, was a focal point of discussion.
Each project within the cluster had the opportunity to present its findings, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and experiences among participants.
The webinar featured a diverse lineup of speakers including Mariano Alcañiz Raya, Fotis Liarokapis, Nuria Pelechano, Nick Achilleopoulos, Vassilis Komis, Andromachi Filippidi. These experts presented their research and innovative outcomes that highlight the synergies between AI and XR technology. Understanding the convergence of XR and AI is not just a trend but a vital area of innovation that can transform multiple industries, from education to manufacturing. Specific use cases, particularly in Industry 5.0 manufacturing and educational settings, demonstrated how these technologies can revolutionise processes and enhance learning experiences.
The “The Ultimate Fusion: Extended Reality Meets Artificial Intelligence” webinar provided valuable insights into the current state and future potential of XR and AI technologies. As projects with the XR projects Cluster continue to collaborate and share their findings, we can expect to see innovative solutions that will shape the future of various industries.
The convergence of XR and AI is an exciting area, and it is clear that the journey has just begun. Stay tuned for more updates as we explore these fascinating developments.
